Visit to USS Midway

Postby strud » Mon Apr 03, 2017 8:48 am

Lucky to have some time off on the weekend in San Diego so we went down to the USS Midway which is opened up as a museum.

On the flight deck were a range of planes including an F14 and F/A 18 and others with various missiles such as sidewinders and some larger air to ground types plus of course some bombs.

A Seaking helicopter that amongst many other missions pulled a bunch of space vehicles (capsules) out of the sea

The always impressive F14 tomcat

A good view of the sidewinder and what I think is an AMRAAM long range air to air missile

Two more missiles note mounted on planes

First I think is a Harpoon air to ship missile :

And this one I think is an AGM88-HARM missile (I could be wrong), designed to take out radar installations

The rest of the tour was also fantastic, with many elderly gents with naval service acting as volunteers and showing everyone around and answering questions.
Interesting fact - apparently when the carrier was performing flight operations (ie needed to be at speed regularly which is around 30knots) it would consume 1,000,000 gal of fuel oil per day to run the boilers !

I highly recommend visiting this boat if you have 3 hours when in San Diego.

Nice shots mate! Sadly that's not an AMRAAM though, it's an AIM-7 Sparrow.

I hope you're eating as much Mexican as possible!

NICE!

Scoop and I managed a visit there back in 2011 and was amazed at some of the gear on board (and that you could actually touch a lot of it...)

So not sure now but maybe this is an AGM-88 HARM as well......

Drew - my mistake, I definitely need to read up more on these units.... so many of them !
