Small drone 'shot with Patriot missile'

Postby CATO » Thu Mar 16, 2017 6:25 am

A Patriot missile - usually priced at about $3m (A$4m) - was used to shoot down a small quadcopter drone, according to a US general.

"That quadcopter that cost 200 bucks from Amazon.com did not stand a chance against a Patriot," he said.

Ok that's slightly amusing, you want to be a bit careful about detonating a patriot just a few meters above the ground in a city.

"Gen Perkins suggested deploying large surface-to-air missiles as a defence was probably not economically wise"
No - probably not

Conventional wisdom suggests this "Patriot vs Drone" story is in the press because Lockheed Martin has just delivered a 60kW class laser on the back of a truck to the US Army. Safe to say in future most quadcopters will be roasted via laser to disable them instead of blown away with a $3.2 million USD missile.
