MARS Attacks

Postby martymonsta » Mon Dec 12, 2016 4:46 pm

But now for THE BIG ANNOUNCEMENT... For the first time ever, Victoria has put its hand up to host a National launch - the AMRS 2017 National Flying Circus!!! The one weekend a year, where one club, in one State, hosts THE rocket event of the year in Australia. This year's event was the amazing 'Williams Wildfire' in WA, and 2015 was the huge 'Thunda Downunder' event in Queensland, so we have some pretty big shoes to fill!

Since the Melbourne Amateur Rocket Society, Aka MARS, is the host club the event has been named 'MARS Attacks' and planning has already begun. The date of the event has been scheduled for Aug 12th and 13th which currently put us at L-Minus 242 days so we have our work cut out for us. There are still many details to work out and improve on, so stay tuned right here as we bring you more details as they are finalized.

We look forward to seeing you all at what will be the launch event of the year, so clear your diaries and save the date because MARS Attacks is the launch event to attend in 2017.

(just don't book accommodation yet)

Hey rocketeers! The theme of Mars Attacks has been decided... 'LOW & SLOW'.
Victoria's crappy weather (especially in August) means there is a chance of cloud cover, and it would be a shame to have people to turn up with altitude-busting rockets, and then perhaps not be able to fly them.
So instead we'd like you to work on those big crowd pleasers that rumble into the sky... but don't actually go that high. My 1:4 V2 for example, only sims' to about 3,500' on an M motor! Also bring along some fancy LPR and MPR rockets if you have them.
Of course bring the high-altitude stuff too (our ceiling to be announced soon), but we just want to be prepared for all eventualities.
This event is going to be awesome!!!

Low and slow. :( I don't think that's me. I'll take my chances with the cloud cover

Sounds like it will be a good event either way :D

We all get back to those eventually, e.g. I fly "low-and-slow" as often as I can, and with pride every time! ; especially when it is for the right reasons! Rocketry in Vic will be great again :)

My comment was not meant to be disparaging anyone who flies low and slow (or whatever really!), it's just not what I prefer to design and fly. I'll watch anything :D

Awesome news!

The one big advantage of low and slow is a very short walk to find your rocket. This means less time wandering around and more time launching!

EXCELLENT!

The 1:1 V2 was the ultimate low and slow I have been involved with. Only 624' on an O25000 8). Landing was exceptionally close to the pad!
