Re: basalt fibre - new material for me

It would be an interesting experiment to try and put some thermocouples in leading edges of a Mach 3+ vehicle to see how much heat is transferred to the fin. Then you could somewhat correlate when you might start having problems.

Re: basalt fibre - new material for me

I'm not too well versed in the materials science of it I am afraid (I can only do the heat flux calcs). But maybe a mixture of silica with some metallic oxides held together with a cement based binder (thats similar to some of the shuttle tiles)? If you wanted an ablative rather than reusable, a cor...

Re: 10th December 2017 Launch and AGM

I will be hopefully coming out on Sunday, but will likely be by myself this time. Is there any chance I could squeeze under someones gazebo at all?

Cheers,

Adam

Re: basalt fibre - new material for me

Just add a ceramic coating to the fins, with a low enough thermal product you could delay any heat penetration to the composite fins until the flight has been completed. That way no need for expensive resins like PEEK or BSI, instead you could get away with some kind of slurry mixture. You'll take a ...

Re: Hi Everyone

Hey Bryan, nice to see another UQ student getting into rocketry ( I myself am 4th year mech aero). I'm sure some of the members on the forum will be able to give you some sound advice regarding the IREC competition. I think some guys have played around with Active stabilisation too, so they might be...

Re: 12th Feb 2017 Launch

Well the rocket gods were in my favour :) Went out to Jimboomba for work today and swung by the launch site to see if my rocket was still dangling and luck would have it, the rocket was lying in the grass with minimal weather damage. I dont know how it untangled itself but there was a section of sho...
