Slower than the sim

Hi Guys. Today I did my L2 cert flight using a J400 Ciseroni. The flight went pretty well, and the altitude was very close to what I had expected in the Openrocket simulation - within 2%. However the velocity was well down- 225m/s against a predicted Mach 1 - 330m/s approx. Why would this be - if th...

Re: 14th October 2018 Launch “October Skies”

It's been a while and my high velocity project has been on the back burner for a while, but have given her the once over, and as long as I can get a battery for the BRB and get it working I should be ready to kick butt in the drag race. I'll be scraping the ceiling!

Phenolic tube mechanical properties

I am looking for the mechanical properties of phenolic tube. In particular:
Density
tensile strength
compressive strength

Thanks

Fin Flutter Frequency

Hi All I'm considering a design for a high speed 29mm MD rocket, and I'm curious about the science of fin flutter. Can someone recommend a source of info? What velocities is it likely to occur? I'd assume transonic velocities would be worst. I can do a modal analysis of the design using FEM, and was...

Re: 21st May 2017 Launch

Thanks all for a great day. My first time back for about 9 months, and Im so glad I got there. After the fog in the morning, I was a bit impatient to get my rocket onto the launchpad, but it was worth the wait. I chose not to take any video because I just wanted to enjoy the moment, but if anyone go...

Re: 11th Sept 2016 launch

Sorry I missed the day - looks like great conditions.

Sometimes life just gets too complicated! Hopefully back for October and looking forward to Westmar.

Re: L2 build

Thanks Matt, I'll take that on board. One reason I was packing so tight was that I didn't really have enough room. I'm going to extend the airframe a bit so there will be more room, especially when I go to a 6 grain case! Hopefully that will free up the space and I can be more boxers than briefs, if...

Re: L2 build

Hi all, The night before the last launch I filmed myself assembling Mohammed Ali, ready for the maiden flight. Its pretty amateur, and a bit long at 18 minutes, but I did it because a number of my non rocketeering friends are showing lots of interest. So at the risk of demonstrating how shoddy my wo...

Re: L2 build

It flies!!!!! GPS put me within a couple of metres of the landing point. I had to replace the altimeter because the one I had was playing up, and I'm glad I did. It was perfect flying conditions at Cedar Grove today. This was on a CTI I120, as a shakedown flight in preparation for L2 cert. Unfortuna...

Re: 10th July 2016 "Advertised" launch.

That was a great day!

Perfect weather, great roll up of the public, and there must have been 100 try/fly rockets launched.

Some really interesting rockets including Matts flying saucer which I loved.

Thanks everyone!

Re: L2 build

I have also settled upon a name for the new rocket. I have made it a policy to name my rockets after dead people. I started with Elvis Presley even though the king never died. I've had BB King and David Bowie, but a couple of weeks ago fate handed me the biggest name of all. My new rocket will be na...

Re: L2 build

Was hoping to paint today but its blowing about 25 knots. Yesterday was raining and too humid -- running out of time. New build might have to fly nude.

Re: L2 build

I haven't had much time over the last few weeks so everything has slowed down. However with the launch this weekend its time to get cracking. The airframe is now complete, and time to test the ejection charges. I did these tests without the parachutes fitted. I have a new chute coming from Blake so ...
