Video preparing the Saturn for flight.

Postby SpaceManMat » Thu Dec 15, 2016 1:31 pm

Came across this video about how the Saturn / Apollo spacecraft were prepared at Cape Canaveral. Very interesting behind the scenes stuff. Completely staggering how much work they did on things even when they were sitting out on the pad. They often has 3 or 4 rockets in various stages of assembly / testing there and where rolling out the next rocket while the one before it was still flying. Of course if anything happened on that mission then the next rocket would be modified on the pad!

Scary moment on the launch of sky lab, during the ignition sequence a relay in the ground equipment bonced and the computer interpreted this as an internal power problem. So commanded the rocket back off internal power onto external power. Fortunately the command came just after the electrical cable to the rocket disconnected. Had it been successfully the entire rocket would have taken off with no power.

More great Saturn footage. We’ve all seen the video from the second stage during staging. This is the full uncut footage from both cameras including them being ejected.
