Full Scale Patriot PAC-1 Missile

Hello all, well, it's about that time to start thinking about what I will be flying at ARTDU2018, seems like a long time away right, "WRONG", given I have to build a launcher, GSE, build and test the rocket, it's not really that far off.

It took me all of 5 seconds to decide on a Full Scale 1:1 Patriot Missile (PAC-1 variant) (actuality it's a 102% upscale :roll: ) , the decision was easy given that my L2 & L3 were flown on Patriots.

She will be just over 16" in dia and 19' (5,800mm) in length, weighing in @ 90 kgs empty, up to around 150 kgs in the 5 x 98mm cluster configuration (final sims will be performed post air frame tube construction) ... At this time I plan on having 2 fin frame configurations, 1 being a 5 x 98mm cluster and the other being a central 1 x 152 + 4 x 75mm cluster configuration, (maybe a third, let's wait and see)...

Still deciding on the final missile configuration, 3 tube DD (as per my half scale), or 2 tube DD (though one opening).

Not just a "Pie in the Sky" all talk no show post (Blake, how about a launch it, eat it event, let's get a few pie manufactures on board), but a true Pipe Dream (Ezy Tube pipe that is)... :roll: The Mandrel will be 404 mm dia, 3.4 mm thick, 4 meters long (I might cut this down to 3 meters due to some damage to the tube) concrete form work tube from EzyTube.

Also received the epoxy, 20 kgs of resin and 6 kgs of hardener, 62 meters of 295 gsm FG and 4 sheets of 2,240 mm x 1,220 mm M80 perforated 3 mm corecell (thanks CG Composites).

Also managed to source a 28 ft Man-Rated Parachute from Aerocon Systems ...

So to sum up, still a long, long, long way off, but at least I have made a start, posting here should give me the drive to completed the build...

I would at this point like to thank Nic, a lot of this build will be based on his build tecnnics.

This is going to be very cool. Your L3 Patriot was one of the highlights of ARTDU15 and I can see this being a highlight of ARTDU18.

Nice! Cant wait to see it finished and flying, expected altitude? Make sure you get comfortable with packing that chute, I've seen quite a few videos of them getting tangled.

Could you use adapters to adapt your motor sizes up/down instead of building 2 lowers sections?

How are you using the EzyTube as a mandrel - does it form part of the airframe once complete or will it be removed?

This is giving me motivation to finish off the Skylark I halfheartedly started building last year

This is just such an impressive project Dave,

Are you going to use those tubes as your BT layered with FG or are you just using them to make your own FG tubes?

What is your plan for a nosecone?
