Athena 3

Postby Lister » Sun Nov 22, 2015 5:41 pm

I have a LOC Athena 3 that I did my L1 on and the last time I flew it one of the fins snapped on landing.. so while I am fixing it (its on the list) I wanted to make another one.. this time building it from scratch and with a bit more knowledge of WTF im doing than when I did the first one. This one will have a 54mm mmt instead of the 38mm the other one has.. I think they come with 29mm but wheres the fun in that.

So far I have some 3" tube I rolled off some heavy duty pvc pipe that is 75mm. They have been post cured at 80° or there abouts.

The fins are 4mm lite ply that wasnt strong enough for my liking so on went a layer of 287GSM to both sides. The centering rings will be cut out of the plate you see next to the fins.. its .3mm CF with a 3mm fibreglass core.. the core alone wasnt very stiff so I added a sheet of .3mm to both sides.. now its stiff as a board.

Went to jaycar the other day and while I was there picked up a couple of small bottles of tamiya enamel thats transparent kind of paint. Mixed some up with the epoxy when making the MMT for the athena 3 and its turned out pretty well. It wont be seen so who cares but for future rockets.. like night flyers it would be perfect. Did seem to thicken the epoxy to my eye but not enough to be an issue.

54mm mmt for the Athena 3 with marine ply reinforced with 287gsm on both sides cos its what was laying around.

So the blue is from mixing the paint in with the resin? Interesting.
When did Jaycar start selling Tamiya paints? There's nothing on their website.

Yes just mixed it with the resin before i put the hardener in.
They have sold it for ages in bendigo.. I would think most enamel paints would be much the same.. also did the same thing with red food dye.. turned a pink colour. Can buy specialised pigment from barnes etc but why bother when this works and you only need a tiny amount.

Ah that explains it, they're a stockist not an actual Jaycar store, shame, was hoping they'd be cheaper than the hobby stores.
Will have to give the paint a try, I asked about pigment/dye for epoxy last time I was at the fibreglass shop and she told me to save my money, didn't ask why, figured she had a good reason to not take my money.

Really, thats odd.. im happy to take your money for some "pigment" :)

Dont quote me but the tiny bottle is about $3.. look on ebay, I got a heap of mr hobby paints when I got my airbrush.. they were a couple of bucks each. If you want ill pick some up next time im in bendigo and send em to you.

Just tried a non transparent paint for fillets.. works ok but I prefer the transparent "dye" kinds. I have also made expanding foam thats fluro by adding water based fluro paint to rigid 2part urethane.. didnt mean to but it work about as well as pml.

Cheers, I have an small range of the solid(opaque) acrylics here that I bought online years ago, but when I realise I need a certain colour or a refill, it's a trip to the local hobby store for the quick fix.
They're not excessively expensive when buying singles, about $5 jar. Jaycar would've been a nice option as they are closer, oh well.

this is cool...

so, you tried the food dye? it might need to go into a bit of solvent first, then added to the epoxy?

being water based and all - i dunno, give it a whirl...

i've used the black tamaya iddy-biddy pots to 'colour' epoxy, doesnt go jet-black but good enough for RAG.

IIRC the red and white ones worked a treat

I only need a tiny little drop too, like half a standard drop - if that is a measure...

Good work boys, play ball!!!

The food dye worked well but I suspect any red will turn out pink, did the tamiya red?

I have used blue food dye for straight resin and it worked well and its cheap as chips.. I dont know if adding a solvent to food dye would be necessary as it seems to work well without it.

using the tamiya and im assuming other enamel paint it might help to add the paint to a poofteenth of acetone before adding to the resin.

Yeah I just poured a couple of drops into 90ml of resin and it was more than enough..

half a standard drop = a poofteenth ;)

Yep, that's the stuff :)

Doesn't look too bad, really - I'd give it the RAG tick 8)

Just another quick tip too if I may...

If you want to avoid that 'golf ball' type finish on your tubes, don't be afraid to use a little bit more juice on your final layer and then peel ply.

Peel wont really help if you are too dry, but will take care of 'a bit more' juice.

You'll get a lovely finish requiring bugger-all sanding. In fact, just a shot of primer filler and a light rub will give you nice smooth finish.

Or bugger the primer filler and just give it a rub, since you've colored the tubes and they look good IMHO. I reckon they would come up an absolute treat if you used some wet-and-dry then polish.

Not as good as mylar, but heaps easier

Oh, and don't say pink (unless your name is Kopius, Cryoscum or Sumo)...

It certainly wasn't red, more like Salmon (g'day Pete) LOL - or trout spawning...that kinda colour...

Might need to be a bit less cost effective with the generosity of my resin :)

Thanks jase ill do that from now on. Gonna be making some more tubes tomorrow for the hell of it so ill put more on the final layer before the peel ply.. looking forward to getting the mylar, will be perfect for coloured tubes.

Too bad this one wont be visible.

also going to crush some graphite to put through the resin on a tube and see if I can get that RAV CF look :)

Your like the Yoda of RAG
