Black Brant X

Postby Lister » Tue Jun 07, 2016 11:59 pm

I have been working on a 3" Black Brant for a while now and its almost finished. Its all scratch built FG and the airframe, mmt, nose cone and boat tail were all put on the lathe and sanded smooth and even, then given a coat of epoxy and then wet sanded down to 2000 grit for a nice finish. Because ausrocketry had no 38mm retainers for so long I ended up mounting two lengths of 6mm all thread into the aft CR so I can retain the motor with a couple of nuts and washers. Might make up an aluminium plate to clamp over the motor.

Here is the mandrel I made for the conical nose cone.

2 layers of 290gsm crowsfoot weave and 3 layers of 287gsm plain weave fibreglass laid up with wests 105/205. Then sanded back and filled with more wests with 411 fillers mixed in.

A 38mm MMT was rolled with 3 layers of 290gsm crowsfoot weave and wests 105/205. Centring rings are made from carbon fibre with a foam core and another layer of CF on the other side.. very strong and works well for CR's and bulk plates.

black brant and black brant X with fins attached. They are TTW and have injected internal fillets with 2 part expanding foam also filling the cavity around the fins and between the CR's.

and this is it with the paint on it, still need to paint the nose (the epoxy on the wooden tip is curing) and apply the decals to the airframe.

I will use a 3" avbay and payload section off the ath3na as I plan on putting an I800VM in it and need electronic deployment for VM motors at the moment.

Just need to add the payload and AV bay to it as im thinking of using an I800VM for its maiden flight and we have to use elec deployment.
