In the UK and I want to fly a rocket...

Postby ROCKet STAR » Tue Jun 28, 2016 10:33 pm

As many of you know I'm currently over in the UK.

There is the "International Rocket Week" launch in Scotland is coming up in August, and I want to head up there and fly something. I have been told that there is something of a shortage of CTI motors over here at the moment and large Aerotech motors are verboten as they are not CE marked.

As such I have decided to build a little 38mm "J" impulse hybrid, and an airframe to fly it in. I believe that the instrument at the launch site is to 16,000", so I'm thinking it'll be minimum diameter.

It's going to be fairly difficult given that all my tools and materials are in Australia, but my dad has a small workshop, so I should be able to get by.

I have started getting some material together. The motor casing is 6063-T6 aluminium tube. 38.1mm diameter with a 1.61mm wall. A quick calculation suggests it should be good to just shy of 2000psi, so should be fine for an N2O hybrid. I then have some 6061-T6 bar stock for the bulkheads and I am waiting on some graphite to arrive for the nozzle. I'll be using cast polyurethane for the fuel grain.

More to come...

Sounds like a great project. How do you plan of making the nozzle?

The nozzle will be turned from graphite. My dad's lathe is significantly bigger and better than my own, so turning the parts for the motor itself will be no issue. The bigger issue will be the airframe not having my laser cutter, composite making stuff, etc.
