Balsa fins cut, total weight 26g as opposed to 70g for the original set.

Image

The balsa was not wide enough so had to glue on a piece of the off cut onto the trailing edge.
Next up sanding and attaching the fins.

Fins now attached

I've now been working on the front body. The small section is going to blue used to join the two ends.

And this is what it will look like when assembled.

I've decided to put the mid and rear sections before gluing in the front

Added balsa at the corners, this allows me to glue in the mid transition flush with the rear section.

Mid section glued into place

Starting to look like the real thing now especially with the canopy added.

Previously I was going to leave the front of the body off until I knew how the CG and weight turned out. However I decided that I would build the nose cone so that I can vary the weight in it. So started by gluing the front, canopy, rear top and bottom sections in place. I've also added my R2 unit which is a cut off from a broom handle.

Nose cone starting to take shape
Image

Internal design. Weight is adjusted by adding additional washers (an addition 20g). If I need more weight then I'll manufacture lead washers.

More work on the nose cone
Image
Note that I added an addition 10g of weights on the balsa.

Here's the result. Total nose cone weight is 30g without any additional weights.

Just about ready for a trail flight on Sunday

Just need to fit a chute and fit a launch lug, plan is to fly a D23-4 to about 500 feet.

Hey Matt

Lovely work, really inventive use of materials and shaping.

Look forward to successful flight photos/video.

Possibly, think you'd want to add control surfaces otherwise it would lawn dart.

So the trial flight of the X Wing went rather well. First some picture...

Here it is on the pad with Poe, waiting to board.
Image

This is the only shot Terri got once the X Wing cleared the rod, it was really fast.

And my rather average video

A few lessons were learnt on the day which was the whole point of the exercise,

When I got to QRS I realised I left my 18mm motor case, so I was forced substitute the D23-4 for a D21-7. Now I knew the delay was long but I assumed its behaviour would be similar to my tardis. IE draggy, basically gravity would not be able to accelerate it too fast, so while deployment would be a bit rough it would not matter too much. From the footage you can see that it was not at all draggy, it actually has very good aerodynamics.

I had thought early in the design that it would be delicate so had decided on an 18 inch chute, this of course resulted in a number of lines ripping through the chute when it deployed at high speed. There was no damage to the body, the cord really cannot zipper as there is a centering ring (for want of a better name) on the front of the body, which I had taken into consideration when deciding on if I should launch.

So
1. I'll be swapping to a 9 or 12 inch chute
2. It will fly hard and fast, make sure deployment timing is correct.
3. Remember to bring everything.
4. Aero performance is quite good, hopefully it follows that CP is reasonably accurate.

On with the build
