AUK XIII - L2 Build

Postby Digit » Thu Jun 07, 2018 9:56 pm

My favorite part of October Sky is the hunt for Auk XIII after they discover they didn't start the forest fire.
Image

Auk XIII is also my favorite rocket from both the movie and the book, so much so that I made myself one:

Image
I have not had a chance to set up the workshop after recently moving house, so what better place to work than outside :)

Image
54mm 6Gxl motor mount assembly.

Image
Trying a new shock cord attachment technique.

Image
4 fins epoxied in (double buttered CJ  )

Image
Epoxy syringe for internal filleting work.

Image
Example of the fillet from syringe.

Image
Fin can voids filled with expanding schmoo for extra reinforcement, this was then trimmed flat and rear centering ring epoxied in.

Image
External fillets layed up.

Image
After hours of sanding, undercoat was applied (note my high tech spray booth setup).

Image
Yellow applied.

Image
My best fillets yet!

Image
Masked up for second colour.

Image
Black applied.

Image
Success!

And safely recovered from 5600 feet on a J145 SK LB for a successful L2 certification flight

Well done Lach.

Did your AUK XIII start any forest fires??? A good grass fire would have done. (Private joke)

It takes a special kind of talent to light dirt on fire, but I’m sure you could have managed

Mate, that is awesome . L2 on a true classic. I think Homer would be proud. That is just so cool as I think you know and most know about my fondness for the book and movie. ! 8)

Ps. Warren...I like that bit about grass fires....
