Steampunk 1

Postby Aquaman33 » Fri Jul 06, 2018 12:58 pm

This my first build thread, so please be gentle.

Every time I go to an NSWRA launch I see loads of amazing rockets, but 99% of them are slick, glossy speed machines so I decided to build something a bit different. I thought it would be cool to try and build something influenced by steampunk, Jules Vern and a bygone industrial age before carbon fiber.

My plan is create a rocket about 750mm long, under 300g (D12 motor) and based on BT-80 tubing.

It won't fly fast or high....more for show than go!

The concept for this project started about 2 years ago when I stumbled across this Rob Hawkins blog where he demonstrated how to turn bright white shiny styrene tubing into rusty old pipes. I immediately thought it would be fun to incorporate this idea into a rocket.

Rob's blog can be found here https://robhawkinshobby.blogspot.com/2013/05/terrain-tutorial-pipes.html but basically he turns this:

Into this:

Image

Witchcraft if you ask me. :D

So I started doing some research to see what others had built.

I found a few examples that had bit more drag than I am comfortable with:

....and some others that looked a bit more sensible:

The hardest part of this build will be the paintwork, and this is not one of my areas of expertise. So it will be a good challenge.

I wanted the colour scheme to contrast different metals - steel, brass, copper etc. Something a bit like this:

Image

......but I am getting ahead of myself.

Time to start building.

Ok that wasn't a great start. Its seems my images aren't working on some mobile devices.

Too late to edit the links, so here we go again.

Apologies for that Viking.....and yes I was using Google Photos.

I posted them again using ImgBB. Hopefully you can see those.

Is there an issue with Google photos?

Hi Aquaman33, check out Krusty's paintwork....probably the sort of effect you are after.

Wow. Stunning.

Thanks for the link.

Don’t think I will be up to that standard, but it’s great inspiration.

This theme would work well for water rockets. :D

I love the steampunk theme. Looking forward to seeing the build.

Might have to do a HPR steampunk of some sort at some stage.

My kids wanted to help with the design.

This is what they came up with:

Image

Combined effort of a 5 year and 7 year old.

Not bad, except I think the parachute us upside down.......and maybe a D12-3 for the maiden.

I think I'll use this as a blueprint.

Good effort from the little ones.

I think they are thinking of the HIAD devices NASA are developing: https://www.nasa.gov/directorates/space ... index.html

I have started to select some of the materials.

Lower section of the body tube will be a shortish BT-80 with 3 fin slots. I think this came from an old Estes Mega Mosquito kit that never got built.

Image

3 fins will be plenty as they will be quite big and there will other stuff providing drag at the rear of the rocket.

The fins will be homemade 3 ply balsa with the middle layer going through the body tube.

The upper tube will just be a longer BT-80 joined with a homemade coupler.

Image

Probably going to use this short rounded nose cone, but I do have a longer pointy one as an alternative.

Image

I have started experimenting with styrene for all the steampunk details. I use Everygreen stryrene which is stocked by most hobby shops, but its a lot cheaper if you buy bulk packs from China. It comes in loads of different rods, tubes, sheets, angles etc. Its easy to cut, shape, sand and glue....except you don't actually glue it. You bond it with a resin that melts the plastic. Its also quite light and easy to paint.

I started by experimenting with fake pipework. I bent sections of rod with a lighter and then glued on small sections of tube.

Image

Quite happy with the results. I just need to decide how to incorporate it in the design.

Image

I also started experimenting with sheet styrene for fake hatches, doors, portholes and strips. I cut the sheets to size, rounded the corners and then used a metal punch to make rows of dents in the back of the sheet.

Image

When you flip them over the bumps look like little rivets. Its quite easy once you work out how much pressure can be applied before the styrene splits.

Image

I also added rivets to the some angle brackets. These will give the appearance of brackets holding on the fins, but they won't actually have much structural benefit.

Image

One of the final stages of the paint job will be dry brushing to highlight the rivets, so they pop out.

That's all for now.
