Shock chord attachment to forward closures

Postby cryoscum » Wed Oct 30, 2013 12:28 pm

Hi All

You can buy a forged steel eye bolt with a 3/8" thread in the US, but they are near impossible to get here. The only ones I've seen are the galv mild steel ones that are not fully welded and the thread only goes halfway up the shaft. You could make it work, but it's very far from ideal.

You do, however, get regular SS 3/8" bolts and metric SS eye nuts. Why not combine the 2 to solve the problem??

Start with a 2" long 3/8" SS bolt (grade 304 in this case)

Cut the head off and thread with your preference of metric thread. I used the lathe's Mach 3 threading wizard for this, but you could thread it manually with a $10 die from Bunnings.

Just screw on the grade 316 SS eye bolts, M8 and M10 in this case) and silver solder in place. It's good to have different size options for the eye bolt now.

Problem solved!

Nice idea, Nic.

I must admit I have spent a considerable amount of time searching for local sources of imperial eye bolts, with little success. I have since purchased them on Amazon. This, however, seems like a good alternative.
