14th October 2018 Launch “October Skies”

Postby Digit » Sun Sep 23, 2018 9:24 pm

LAUNCH INVITATION

The Queensland Rocketry Society Inc (QRS) would like to invite all interested people and members of the Australian rocketry community to our October Skies - "Flames, Smoke & Noise" spectacular launch.

After the success of our previous "Flames, Smoke & Noise" launch, we're doing it all again!

This launch will be well promoted so we are expecting a large number of spectators and potentially media coverage so bring your biggest*, loudest and most exotic rockets and have some fun showing our hobby off to the public! There will be a sausage sizzle and cold drinks available for purchase, and there will also be toilet facilities onsite for this launch.

Remember to pre-order any larger motors required that Australian Rocketry might not carry in their mobile store!

Just a reminder this is a change to our usual advertised launch in that it has paid entry for non-QRS members.

LAUNCH DETAILS

Date: Sunday 14th October 2018
Range Open: 0800.
Range Closed: 1300.
Ceiling: 5000ft AMSL. (A NOTAM will be posted with Air Services Brisbane office).

DIRECTIONS

If you require directions to launch area 2 at Cedar Grove, please refer to the QRS Website.

SPECIAL NOTICES FOR THE DAY

* Members are asked to sign in at the RSO table at 8:00am.
* If your membership is not current on the day, you will not be able to launch.
* HPR rocketeers will need to provide evidence of a current QLD explosives licence.
* If launching an unproven design, either scratch built or a modified kit, bring a copy of your sim so the RSO can verify the stability/safety of your rocket.

AMRS CERTIFICATION FLIGHTS

This launch is AMRS sanctioned and AMRS certification flights for Level 1 & 2 will be conducted. Remember to make arrangements with the AMRS Certification Officer prior to the launch day. AMRS members from across Australia who wish to attempt certification are welcome to attend for this purpose.

UNFAVOURABLE WEATHER

If adverse weather or other conditions on the day of the launch effect the launch program, the launch will be rescheduled. If on the day of the launch, you are uncertain the launch will proceed, check this post for updates or contact ‪07 33331655‬and follow the prompts to local clubs. A cancellation notice will be posted to the launch site shortly after 7:00am on the day of the launch.

See you there!

*N.B. Due to launch site restrictions, we must still operate within our 5000' ceiling, however you're welcome to use every inch of it and make a lot of noise in doing so! 8)

It's been a while and my high velocity project has been on the back burner for a while, but have given her the once over, and as long as I can get a battery for the BRB and get it working I should be ready to kick butt in the drag race. I'll be scraping the ceiling!

Do we know what 38mm motor the drag race is using? I emailed Matt but haven't heard back... I need to sim some things before I volunteer...

At this point we are still 'go' for this weekend.

The local weather pattern in Jimboomba recently has been for clear mornings with afternoon rain. If this holds then we will be good for the launch on the weekend.

As always though, stay tuned to the forum and the qldrocketry website.

It’ll take an F5 tornado to stop me from launching. I don’t believe in inclement weather 8)

QRS has been following the weather all week with only late afternoon showers that wouldn’t affect the launch. Unfortunately there has been a change in the weather pattern and 20mm of rain is predicted over the course of the event.

To give everyone the best experience at Flames, Smoke & Noise, the QRS Committee has decided to postpone the event until Sunday, 28 October 2018.

14th October 2018 Launch “October Skies”

If someone can update the flyer for the 28th October, I’ll start recirculating it on LinkedIn again...

The last one I shared got several thousand views, ~350 of which were in Brisbane.

A large crowd for the advertised launch was met with with gloomy weather early that was replaced by perfect flying conditions with no cloud or wind.

There were 118 launches for the day including: 54 fly it take it, 2 x A, 11 x B, 20 x C, 5 x D, 4 x E, 3 x G, 10 x H, 2 x I, 5 x J, 2 x K.

Largest motor of the day was between the K1200 in Mark's War Rocket Ajax V2 and K535 in David's The Orca.

Other notable launches include: Finn's V2 flying on D12-3, Leroys' beautifully finished Satun V flying on an E20 and Matt's Triple Fist on 3 x H110 motors.

Scalded cat award was split between Paul (Ballistic Pineapple) and Bryan (Slavvy Boi) flying on K550 motors.

The final launch was an earth rumbling 5 rocket J motor drag race... With two rockets left on the pad!

A big thank you to all of the fantastic volunteers on the day, in particular Lisa, Matthew, Mark and Di on the BBQ, Paul, Cran, Warren, Jeff, Aidan and Petar for set up / pack up, Warren, Phil for FITI, Sarah and Matthew on the gate and everyone else that helped on the day.

Thank you all for the great launch day. Our pair of Estes RTF crayons had a couple of very successful launches and a lot of fun watching!

Kudos to all.
