Westmar September 2015 Launch

Postby cryoscum » Mon Sep 14, 2015 11:43 am

Hi All

As you all know the next Westmar launch is on the weekend of 26 Sept 2015 and the waiver will be 120,000', as always. For those of you planning on flying above 18,000', please make sure to contact me so we can look through the rocket design and flight profile together. I'll upload the historic weather data for last year to the AMRS members section later today. It currently looks like we'll have the main site (LA1) and one of the away cells (LA2) active, but speak to the Launch Director or LCO on the day for final details. It will of course also be announced on the day at the pre-launch briefing.

The long range forecast is looking good and the historic data seems to bear that out. An extract from the AMRS TAG Report using averages for the corresponding week last year:

"Summary: The overall conditions are not much different from Thunda in March, as this is roughly the same transitioning season being close to the equinox. Light WSW winds at the surface gradually increases to approx 60km/h at 18,000'. The jetstream (generally between 27,000' and 55,000') is almost exactly W at approx 150km/h. Flights below 30,000' should expect drift in a NE direction. Flights above 30,000' should expect drift in a ENE direction. Morning dew is expected as well as temps in the low to mid 20's. LA1 and LA2 will be available for launch, please coordinate with the Launch Director or the LCO."
Log in to the AMRS website to get the specific data.

We will also be trialing the new high speed internet connection & WiFi hotspot as well as some new tracking equipment. For those interested please set aside a few hours on Friday night for an abbreviated workshop on high altitude / high speed flights that will cover the basics of rocket design and also working with high altitude wind data to predict dispersal patterns. It won't be overly detailed as we don't have that much time, but you should walk away from it with a better understanding of what to do and what not to do.

See you all there...
Cheers

Is ordinary hire car suitable for Westmar?

(I assume you just park off the road and do a little walk)

Ordinary hire car should be fine. Keep in mind that the last 5 km or so is on dirt roads on the property itself and is a bit rough.

You will be able to park right next to the flight line.

If I want to get my L1 cert, what do I need to do?

I'd be coming with bare essential kit, rocket and no motors or fuses. [i.e. things I can take on a plane]

It is a Callisto .... 29mm.

Thanks

Don't worry, we'll do something like that again in the city soon. It's part of our longer term planning to do these workshops in order to maximise everyone's learning and flight performance. Another one planned soon is on composites and using pre-made components effectively to achieve insane results.

I would like nothing better than to see scores of people flying 50k' flights on a regular basis. We have the space for it and we have the talent, just need the confidence and a bit of guidance. That's all.

Joe, where are you coming from and where will you be the day or two before the launch? I'm sure there will be plenty motors available for your cert, but I would suggest you PM me to discuss further. We can then make sure you have everything you need to do the cert...

Cheers

I hope that if you have been launching smaller models to prepare for MPR/HPR that you have been using Igniters not fuses.

A bit "ravey" for my liking, but I'll work with it! Have some G's for the job. :)
Also ready for the N5800 launch, hoping for Saturday morning...

Haha, nothing like a party at Westmar :-)

Excellent, I am thinking about burning the N2717WC I have. Already planned a few K and L flights.

Yeah white cloud that fits the 98/11000 hardware. Speaking of which, we really need to let some of those M1565 Black Lightning motors rip again soon, I'm having withdrawals!
