Do we have a clip whip at the club?

Postby snrkl » Wed Sep 20, 2017 9:17 pm

I've got a few clusters (first time!) to fly in October.. I'm wondering if we have a club clip whip that I can use, or do I need to look at making one?

I saw something amazing looking attached to @digit's launch escape system - I'm assuming it was a clip whip type thing to light the 4 motors in that sexy bird he built?

Hey mate we don't at the moment. What you saw on my setup was just home made with the igniters soldered in situ.

A club one might make sense for HPR / MPR where the igniter leads are long. But low power the leads are far too short. If it was a bunch of clips then they would short out. If it was a terminal block device it would get blasted and become unreliable, which would lead to some motors lighting but not others. Solder up an extension takes out the possibility only some lighting. Also put a mutli meter on your igniter before you solder it.

With the Wilson F/X launch controller you shouldn't need to use a clip whip....

@SpaceManMat: I have a multimeter - what should I be testing the igniter for?

I don't think my multimeter has a continuity / short check function... That being said, I grabbed another one at Aldi recently, but I haven't had a chance to use it in anger yet...

You should be checking resistance (ohms). You want to see some resistance, not open circuit and not short circuit. After testing a few it should become apparent as to what the typical resistance should be.

A continuity tester won't tell you if you have a short.
