8th March 2020 Launch "Flames Smoke & Noise Spectacular"

Postby Digit » Tue Mar 03, 2020 5:53 pm

LAUNCH INVITATION

The Queensland Rocketry Society Inc (QRS) would like to invite all interested people and members of the Australian rocketry community to our March "Flames, Smoke & Noise" spectacular launch.

After the success of our previous "Flames, Smoke & Noise" launch, we're doing it all again!

This launch will be well promoted so we are expecting a large number of spectators and potentially professional media coverage so bring your biggest*, loudest and most exotic rockets and have some fun showing our hobby off to the public! There will be a sausage sizzle and cold drinks available for purchase, and there will also be toilet facilities onsite for this launch.

Remember to pre-order any larger motors required that Australian Rocketry might not carry in their mobile store!

Just a reminder this is a change to our usual advertised launch in that it has paid entry for non-QRS members.

LAUNCH DETAILS

Date: Sunday 8th March 2020
Range Open: 0900.
Range Closed: 1300.
Ceiling: 5000ft AMSL. (A NOTAM will be posted with Air Services Brisbane office).

DIRECTIONS

If you require directions to launch area 2 at Cedar Grove, please refer to the QRS Website.

SPECIAL NOTICES FOR THE DAY

* Members are asked to sign in at the RSO table at 9:00am.
* If your membership is not current on the day, you will not be able to launch.
* HPR rocketeers will need to provide evidence of a current QLD explosives licence.
* If launching an unproven design, either scratch built or a modified kit, bring a copy of your sim so the RSO can verify the stability/safety of your rocket.

AMRS CERTIFICATION FLIGHTS

This launch is AMRS sanctioned and AMRS certification flights for Level 1 & 2 will be conducted. Remember to make arrangements with the AMRS Certification Officer prior to the launch day. AMRS members from across Australia who wish to attempt certification are welcome to attend for this purpose.

UNFAVOURABLE WEATHER

If adverse weather or other conditions on the day of the launch effect the launch program, the launch will be rescheduled. If on the day of the launch, you are uncertain the launch will proceed, check this post for updates or contact ‪07 33331655‬ and follow the prompts to local clubs. A cancellation notice will be posted to the launch site shortly after 7:00am on the day of the launch.

See you there!

Hi all, I lost a rocket today, west of the launch pad.

It’s blue with a yellow nose one. Really keen to recover because it had an RRC3 on board.

Cheers Brad

I may have seen that. Was it in long grass towards the fence by the farm. I thought I saw another rocket as I walked to mine. I can give you the gps of mine. It would have been about 100yds back towards the launchpad.

That would be about right. I looked there and then thought it went further west. I climbed the fence and spent 30 minutes in the really tall grass.

If the one I saw was yours it def wasn’t over the fence. Mine chute had blown into the fence which is why I kept going when I saw what was prob yours as I was worried the chute was going to tear. I would say maybe 150m inside the fence line.

Had a slight mishap on that flight, one of the lines wrapped around the corner of the chute so it didn’t fully inflate. Came down a bit heavy but no damage.

It took 5 goes to get that first motor lit and it looks like the redline spat the ignitor before it lit

Perfect flying conditions, green grass and a herd of cows greeted flyers and spectators at the advertised launch held yesterday by QRS.

Multiple launch pads were set up that saw:

- 46 launches on the main flying field: A 1, B 4, C 12, D 3, E 4, F 4, G 9, H 6, I 2, K 1
- Two ejection tests on the main field
- I have cards numbered up to 95(!) for the Fly-It Take-It field
- It's rocket science launch water rockets continuously throughout the whole morning

Highlights were:

The UQ team's "Project Aurora" having a perfect flight on a K570 motor to 2200 ft
Brendan Hawkins Dad's Army inspired rocket "Don't Tell Him Pike" flying an I242 motor to 2700 ft
Paul Lees "Ballistic Pineapple" took off like it had somewhere better to be on an H550 motor
Greg Traise flying the fantastic looking Estes Saturn V on an E12-4
Evan Thomas scratch built carbon fibre rocket effectively becoming a Blackhawk 24

The advertised launch event has really grown over the past couple of years with the water rockets, fly-it take-it rockets, solar viewings and sausage sizzle making a real festival feel for the day.

A big thank you to everyone who helped on the day, particularly:
Jodie, Di and Mark on the BBQ
Ari and Petar on LCO
Rob, Phil and Warren on fly-it take-it
Mark on RSO
And particularly to everyone who helped setup and pack up the site...

We can't do it without all of you!

Apologies if I have missed anyone!

See you next month!!!

PS Photos and Videos to come... Don't expect them to be as good as SpaceManMats.....
