Hello in Queensland

Postby fryers » Sat Nov 25, 2017 10:37 pm

Hi All,

I signed up with Queensland Rocketry Society a couple of months ago and have been to a couple of launches with mixed success. It is interesting, challenging and I am learning a lot.

My background / day job is remote telemetry and control systems for utilities, SCADA in the industry, Industrial Internet of Things for those who like buzz works. I kinda fell into this area and really like it as it is a nice mixture of electronics, software and if necessary, taking things back to fundamental physics.

I ended up being interested in rocketry for two reasons. Firstly, I went to a QRS launch event and got hooked. There is something rather fundamentally engrained in my psyche relating to watching rockets which brought a smile to my face. Secondly, it is a good outlet for my 4 year old to learn basic physics and practical assembly skills.

After some thought as where I would like to progress. I am thinking of something which hits 4900ft with home brew telemetry for acceleration, positional monitoring and temperature and humidity measurements... The sensors are cheap! Then maybe to 59000ft! Something to work towards!

Welcome aboard Simon! Rocketry is a great mix of all the things you mentioned, and throw in some travel and social aspects as well and it is a great hobby.

SCADA is good fun on large systems. I used to do the software that runs the trains in Melbourne. It's the biggest train set I ever got to play with! IoT and all the subsets are opening up many possibilities that nobody ever dreamed about before. I am trying to figure out where the company I work for fits into the IoT ecosystems currently. Lots to learn.

Have fun :D
