Horizon - 2 Stage Water Rocket

Postby air.command » Fri Dec 08, 2017 2:35 pm

Howdy,

We are starting on a new project that we hope to either fly at Thunda or earlier in Mullaley if we get it done in time. Here is a bit of an intro to what it looks like.

The booster will have around 810Ns of total impulse so in the J class motor category, and the sustainer will be an H class motor equivalent. We've been working on this one for a while so have made some progress, but there is still a very long way to go. We will be making build progress videos as we go, so I will post them here as well.

We also need to build a new launcher that will be remotely controlled because we don't want to be anywhere near this thing when it is up to pressure. The two scuba tanks will be located at the pad rather than having a long hose going to the rocket.

Here is the next installment in the series. In this video we discuss the design concept behind the staging mechanism for the rocket. We also do a couple of low pressure test flights to test the concept.

In the next video we'll have a look at how we modify this design to work with the Horizon rocket and also have a look at actual flight hardware.

It's been a while since I have updated this thread. We're continuing to make good progress on this rocket, and with Thunda less than a year away we need to push a little more. Here are parts #3 and #4 of the series. Part #5 should be out next week.

Absolutely amazing as always George 8)

Not only is the rocket professionally produced, so are the videos!

Here are the next two parts of the series.
Part 5 is about building a test stand to apply forces (up to 10kN) to different components before we subject them to compressed air.

Part 6 describes the overall launcher design and also how we made the release head that holds down the entire rocket.

There isn't a whole lot of time before Thunda, only like 40 weekends or so left.
