Water Rocket Altitude Record

Postby air.command » Tue Oct 08, 2019 9:44 am

We had the opportunity to fly our rocket at the last NSWRA's Mullaley HPR launch. Here is a video of a couple of those flights:

We're working on a follow up video that has a closer look at the data from these flights and how it compares to simulations. We're now going start focusing on building the first stage booster for this rocket.

As a guy who kniws zero about Rockets and even less about water rockets, holy cow.
That is the most interesting thing I've watched in a long time.
Time to read.

Just saw your video on flight analysis. Was wondering about the possibility of a water rocket add in to Open Rocket. Should be able to substitute the motor thrust data / weight and use the same calculations that your online calculator uses instead.

@SpaceManMat I believe that it's possible. I think I have read that some people have created motor files for their water rockets to simulate in OR. It would be nice to be able to just set the parameters in the program itself. I think it was one of the future plans they have listed:

Planned future features
OpenRocket is under constant work in the free time of the developers. You can have a sneak preview on what has been planned by checking the TODO-file in the git repository.

Below are a few major features that are under consideration:
...
Customized support for hybrid rocket motors and water rockets
....

One of the people that worked on the OpenRocket renderer commented on the video, it could be worth while to talk to them about the posibility of integrating the water rocket simulation calculation engine we are using in the simulator. The original source code was written in Java so it may be an easier port.

Another posibility may be to get the water rocket simulators to output a motor file that could be imported into OR.

When it comes out see how you like it and then we can go from there.

As for making motor files, that’s pretty easy, you could do it manually.
