Almost all motors on backorder

Postby Raaahbin » Thu Feb 28, 2019 9:48 pm

Hi there,

I've just been putting together a shopping cart of motors for Thunda2, and almost every motor I'm looking to buy is listed as "Out of stock - available for backorder". Is there going to be a shipment before Thunda2, or will I need to make do with the motors I've already got? I'm certainly happy to order things for collection at Thunda like I did last time... but not much point in ordering motors to burn at Thunda if they won't be in the country before then!

Cheers,
Robin

Hi Robin,

The motor order for THUNDA2 closed in September 2018 as ample time was needed to ensure CTI would be able to fill the motor order. My expectation is that Blake has further stock en route with the motor order that exceeds the THUNDA2 order to restock AusRocketry but you'd have to speak to him about that. If I were him I certainly wouldn't list them as "in stock" until they were actually on the ground so it's not entirely unsurprising that most AP is being listed as Out of stock.

Makes sense - I can certainly get every rocket flown with the motors I've already got, but for a special event like Thunda I'd prefer to be able to do a few flights per day if I can. Hopefully the container will arrive soon and we'll see what we've got!

So, now that Thunda has occurred are the stock levels for any remaining motors going to be updated in the Ausrocketry store? It still seems pretty sparse in there. Did the container also have other stuff in it, like altimeters, trackers, etc?

I think we can end this thread now as our in house poo expert has spoken. Right Ace Rimmer?

If the thread is going to be closed, I'd prefer for it to be after my two questions were answered.

A valid question Wozos, I'm sure many people would like to know the answer.

Alright folks, I think we need to confirm we're all looking at the same website! I just had a browse through the store, currently in 29mm and 38mm formats AusRocketry has OVER 300 reloads available in CTI and AeroTech 29mm and 38mm reload form factors. Below is a more detailed breakdown.

AeroTech 29mm
29/180 - 6 reloads available.
29/240 - 12 reloads available.
29/360 - 2 reloads available.

AeroTech 38mm
38/240 - 22 reloads available.
38/360 - 15 reloads available.
38/480 - 8 reloads available.
38/600 - 1 reload available.
38/720 - 5 reloads available.
38/1080 - 19 reloads available.
38/1320 - 1 reload available.

CTI 29mm
1 grain - 5 reloads available.
4 grain - 14 reloads available.
5 grain - 11 reloads available.
6 grain - 30 reloads available.
6GXL - 12 reloads available.

CTI 38mm
1 grain - 116 reloads available.
2 grain - 21 reloads available.
5 grain - 1 reload available.

So given that I don't think you can realistically claim it's sparse in there considering the quantity and range of reloads available for purchase in the store.

If you're looking for big motors, have a look at the AeroTech DMS offerings. There are 12 DMS motors available in the K and L impulse class range in 54mm form factors.

If those offerings aren't what you're after then my recommendation is to buy exactly what you want when Blake announces that he's putting together a new motor order. This is effectively the best way to ensure you get EXACTLY what you're after. You can't reasonably expect a small business like AusRocketry to stock multiples of every reload under the sun when individual reloads in 54mm and higher form factors can easily reach the mid 3 figures and even higher.

In my specific case I often order motors I want YEARS in advance. The L935 and M2245 I flew at THUNDA were purchased in June of 2015.

TLDR; if you want something specific order it well in advance when AusRocketry announces a new motor order!

Ok Mark, what's your recommendation then? What better way is there to source AP motors in Australia other than placing your motor order when AusRocketry is organising a new shipment from the US? Further, your post is very sparse on details. Are you saying that you attempted to place a motor order in the last shipment and NONE of it got fulfilled? Or did certain motors not arrive despite you ordering them? Have you confirmed that this was a fault of AusRocketry or maybe was it that CTI didn't fulfil ANY motor orders for certain reloads despite having multiples ordered and paid for in advance?

I had a chat with someone at Thunda from the US who was downright AMAZED at the amount of large CTI motors (eg N5800s and O3400s) that were being flown at the event. They were amazed because apparently since the CTI accident US motor vendors have had a heck of a time sourcing these reloads themselves.

Did you get any of the motor order in the previous thread you opened here?

Yep, we're on the same website. Yep, there's 300 items in the 18 stock lines that you mentioned. Here's one for the Records Commitee - over 1100 stock lines that are out of stock!
Was the entire contents of the container consumed at thunda?
I don't think we are being unrealistic in asking for the website to be updated.

......With a number of products low in stock, we anticipate this container to be filled with all of your favourites, plus a number of new items never been seen before in Australia.......

I see an enormous business opportunity here for you "Ace". Start your own company and start importing rocket motors.
Can't be that hard can it?
