cairns rocketry

Postby Pluto » Sun Aug 26, 2012 12:18 pm

Hi all
My name is Luke Towan, I'm trying to get back into rocketry and was planning on joining QRS but work has me moving to cairns in 2 months time, I really want to be a member of a club but can't find anything in cairns.
Dose anyone know what options I have? Or is there a club in cairns?
Thanks
Kind regard
Luke.

Obviously I cannot speak for QRS, however I cannot see any issues in having a Cairns branch of QRS, maybe you need to talk directly with one of the committee members. I'm sure they will steer you in the right direction.

Maybe even one of the committee members can chime in with a suggestion. I know they are all great folks to deal with.

The only potential issue I can see is gathering members for your little "chapter" although I'm sure with a bit of help it wouldn't be too difficult to find like minded souls around Cairns.

I'm thinking I could join QRS anyway and come to club launches when I can. The guys at QRS sound pretty knowledge and I could learn alot at the meetings. Forums are good but nothing is better than face to face.
Might get expensive flying down all the time.
Anyway........ Trying to work it out.

Hi Pluto

I live in Albury NSW most of the time, but business travel to Brisbane very often. I'm still a proud QRS member and go to the launches several times a year, certainly every chance I get. No doubt speaking to the commitee will provide some options for you and I would highly recommend joining.

Cheers

Last time PK and I went to Cairns to fly rockets, we came to the rather quick and abrupt conclusion that there weren't too many places suitable for flying up there. That was over a decade ago though.

Along the lines of what Troy mentioned, we would need to know of some suitable launch sites and their GPS coordinates and email them directly to our club secretary on info@qldrocketry.com and we will table it at the next meeting. From there we would see what we could do for you.

A good fella by the name of Matthew was up in Cairns .He was one of the original members of the first forum that collapsed and he is a member of this forum. Matthew has built some awesome rockets in the past and he would be well and truly worth looking up if your in Cairns.

It might be worth a shot having a look around on the "Tablelands". Just a thought.

Thanks all for the support
I dont move to Cairns until about the 25th of November.
I've been looking at my flying charts and from about 90km the controlled airspace step is 8,500ft and futrther out at 160km its 18,000ft, if i go directly SE the 8,500ft step is a bit closer to Cairns, only 65km. Near the small town of Malanda, there looks like there are alot of open areas and farm land there which looks ok...... Google Earth is a wonderful thing :P
I'm not really sure about how to set up a launch area, guess I'd need land owners permission. I might try sending an email to the local council there to see if they know of safe areas and what I can do to get permission.

I believe Mike "Chopper" Limpus still lurks in this forum. He's a Cairns boy and you'd be hard pressed to find a better rocket buddy.

Hi Luke,

The QRS committee have been briefly discussing your future requirements and I would like to talk to you some more, probably over the phone. I think it would be fantastic to see you operational in Cairns and I know there is many people in QRS who are supportive of your endeavours.

Please email me at info@qldrocketry.com to have a chat.

I know of 4 more (including myself) that are keen to get something going in the far north if something isn't already in place? I also know of some land that is more than large enough for meets. The only problem is the new qld laws surrounding clubs :?

There was some talk at Westmar about getting something going up here with regards to a QRS chapter, and if I can work it into my schedule I'll be attending the QRS RSO/LCO course in September. I don't think I've heard of the new laws you're talking about though.

Cool 8) Keen to hear what happens in September! Fingers crossed!

I don't think these laws will be as they for long, it's not worth going to go into it on here... :?
