Broadband speed

Postby skippy » Fri Jul 11, 2008 7:57 am

I was at a clients' office yesterday, and in addition to cursing Vista as I linked their new desktop to the shared printer on their XP box, I tested the speed of their broadband connection.

http://speedtest.net/

Well, they are talking to their ISP after the test returned 487kb/s download for their direct connection.

So, in the ARF spirit of competition; who has the highest connection speed?

I'll lead off, 'cause I know it won't be me. Copy and paste the 'Forum link' when the test completes.

Scoop, how do you find iinet? I've had nothing but problems with them since connecting last December. I'm surprised my speed is quicker than yours tho :)

The variation is quite surprising. Interesting too that none of us are near the theoretical top speed of our connections.

Hi Guys

I can think of a number of variables that may affect the result. For example the above result has been dome while I have been a member of a network of three servers and about six workstations and there is always some traffic in or out of the network to the outside world.

This test was also performed on a PC that was also doing a BitCommet download.

My connection is over "copper" (ADSL) L2 and after looking some of the other speeds I can see that some of you are probably on Fibre Optic cable.

Also the distance you are from the nearest exchange (this may simply be a DSLAM in "Little Grey" roadside box box, may also affect your result due to attenuation of your signal.

ZDNET suggest that speed test are best performed when the PC is in safe mode with networking enabled.

For those of you who are "purist" may prefer to TELNET a 3 files progressively incrementing sizes (1MB 2MB 4 MB ) direct from your ISP and then average the displayed result.

But Hell - despite all this, I was still very impressed with the software!

 umm cos I'm no good at following simple instructions? :)

Incidentally also I tried this at work and got about 6400kbps which I was impressed with.

NORMAL Mode

Well this is neat!

I have shut down almost all other activity on the network and I am posting on a lone workstation running in SAFE mode with networking enabled. Look at how this result compares to my previous attempt

Image
SAFE Mode

No diferrence between SAFE and NORMAL mode operation. (Did I ever mention how much I hate SAFE mode)

I really think I can use this - Great Find Skippy!
