Saturday 12th October Williams Launch

Postby Scoop1261 » Mon Sep 09, 2013 6:50 pm

TRA members and invited guests are welcome to attend the range located at Williams, 175kms South of Perth, on Saturday the 12th of October for the last of the flying season of our regular club launch.

The CASA instrument permits launches of HPR up to a ceiling of 18,000ft and with opportunities for windows to 23,500ft with prior approvals. DMP has given permissions for the use of J, K, L, M & N impulse motors.

Facilities will be available onsite for TRA members wishing to attempt L1, L2 & L3 internationally accredited certifications, which are recognized in all Australian states and over 23 countries worldwide.

The range will open for operation at 09:30 and will continue through to 17:00. Any assistance with range setup is appreciated.

The normal infrastructure expected at any typical launch will be in place, including LPR racks with rod sizes ranging from 1/8" - 1/4" MPR launch pads with rods of 1/4", 3/8", 1/2" & 10/10 rail. HPR pads with rods 1/4", 3/8", 1/2" & 10/10 rail along with specialty pads utilizing 15/15 rail or Capral extruded rail on a 3.5 metre tower.

All types of rocket motors can be ignited using the "club" launch system including hybrids

Great day of launching with a couple of newly certified folks.

Unfortunately not a lot of pictures, but here are a couple.

Here are some more photos from yesterday's launch.

Julian attempted to get his level 1 on his AMRAAM but had an early deployment. It sucks, but he'll be back next year to take what's rightfully his!

Mark "Capt'n Smokey" Haslam flew his Firestorm. Great flight!

After receiving his Level 1 Joe flew his Blackhawk 24. Unfortunately the forward closure failed and things went a bit pear shaped.

Image

And to finish off the day Dave brought out his 6" Thor loaded with a M1297.

Image

I went and hid behind a huge downed tree to get better launch photos.

The beauty of big rockets is that even when flying M motors your distance to recovery is much shorter. In this case I reckon Dave's Thor came down maybe 200 meters from the pad and was still in the same paddock!

Well done everyone! Sorry for the lack of photos when compared to a normal launch, the preparation for my L3 took up most of the morning.

Great to see you're still flying your Thor, Scoop. It's a little symbolic to fly your L3 rocket on the same day two other Aussies certed L3.

well....the last launch of the year is done and dusted...and usually its a bit of a sad day for me knowing its going to be 6 months 'till we're at it again...but yesterday was pretty special.

Drew and Joe's successful certifications were definite highlights.

Another superb lunch prepared and served up by Mel. Big big thanks Mel

I had my most enjoyable flight of the year...watching the Firestorm cruise up on that J401 and come down in a perfect dual deployment descent was worth waiting 'till 2:30 pm for a nice calm blue sky (which remained for the rest of the day and made Dave's launch really special, the 6" Thor on that M just looked so lazy!).

Even though the Firestorm didn't land too far away, having the BRB900 on board paid off after it landed in the tall oats.

Big thanks too to our Prefect Dave, for organising and setting up this years events.

A great great day in great company, roll on next season!

(I really must finish off my L3 project now...)

Not quite correct ....... My L3 rocket was the 4 inch Thor - X whilst the rocket flown on the weekend is a 6 inch version of the Thor ..... nice thought just the same :D
