Tested at BALLS 2017

Postby drew » Fri Dec 08, 2017 5:34 pm

I found this video quite humorous, especially the reactions Simone has to various issues. it's always curious to see what "average people" think of our pursuits.

never thought to use a rocket motor to sink a bore, far quicker than using a rig :D

Haha that is funny. I actually made an EX motor (3 grain 6” ~O3000) for a static burn and was told I couldn’t burn it upside in Potter NY state, coz it would vanish into the water below the surface, so now I understand why. Bob from rockets magazine later burnt it for us and it worked out pretty nice, just a shame I didn’t get to see the fruits of my labour. Well actually I also made a 4” L motor and that flew nicely, so at least saw some of the propellant burnt

So I'm just flicking through the latest issue of Rockets Magazine and it appears that a whole slew of I and J impulse motors were flown at Balls. Any idea as to when or why they made the change? Last time I flew over there the minimum was K impulse motors to get your rocket on the flight line, hence the reason I flew at XPRS on a J825 the week before.

Haven’t seen the article yet. Where they experimental? Any size experimental is allowed i believe or at least any HPR experimental is.

A handful appear to be Ex but the vast majority were commercial. Here's a brief list.

I59 - Aerotech
I200 - Aerotech
J228 - Ellis Mountain
J425 - Both Aerotech and CTI
J450 - Both Aerotech and Gorilla
J400 - CTI and AMW
I175 - CTI
I280 - Metal Storm
J150 - CTI or Contrail

Also, this snippet was included...

David Wilkins shook off the jet lag after his long trip from Melbourne, Australia to his fly 3” diameter,
gray Amraam called BOD Members Do Fly Rockets on a J90 for a satisfying boost and recovery.

The J90 is a Aerotech 54mm Long Burn motor.
