CRG High Power launch 6th and 7th July

Postby Busterandjo » Sat May 18, 2013 9:15 pm

The next Canberra Rocketry Group High power Launch will be held at our Ardlethan site on the 6th and 7th July, weather permitting. Our plan is to be launching on both Saturday and Sunday with launching kicking off about 8:30 each morning. Launching will wrap up at about 1pm on Sunday.

As with last time, the plan is to meet up at the London Hotel on the Friday night for a get together over a few beers and a meal. The London is also the place most of us stay with good but a limited amount of accommodation.

All rocketeers are welcome to attend and fly to their certification level. We look forward to seeing you there.

Hi busterandjo,

i thank yourself and the CRG for this kind invitation.

For all us non locals, are you able to advise what are the operational limitations for the site (height, weight, Ns, cylinder, etc, etc).

Also, could your pls advise what the flight fees are, and what if any additional requirements that need to be met prior to be able to participate in your launch.

Thanking you in advance, David.

Hi BusterandJo

I am also very interested to find out more. Unfortunately I am away on the weekend in question, but would really like to come launch with you in the near future :)

Thanks

G'day CATO, cryoscum & all.

Some info that will hopefully help your planning.

Our site is authorised under CASA instrument SY13/12 and has a ceiling of 15,000 ft AMSL, being 3,000 ft below the class-E controlled airspace commencement at 18,000 ft.
Our launch area is defined as a 2,500m radius from S34 14 36.29 / E146 53 51.86, which is within the property known as 'Fairlight' near Beckom, NSW. When active, the range operates under a standard AirServices NOTAM, which typically provides for flights between 0800 to 1700 local on each day of the launch.

Regarding approved launch vehicles - those defined within CASR (1998) 101.425 - i.e. the standard definition of a high power rocket, but excluding sounding rockets, sub-orbital rockets or anything that falls under the provisions of the Space Act (1998). So put away those Black Brandts, Terrier-Orions, Nike Smokes etc for the time being....

As the CRG operates as a section of the ARA, the approval extends to financial (and where applicable, certificated) members of the ARA. Members of other recognised associations, such as TRA are very welcome to fly too - the only provisions being that we need to sight a copy of their membership and have a little bit of advanced notice of their intention to join us, so that we can extend the necessary insurances.

Guests are welcome to fly to the limits of their certification level, provided they can comply with the standard HPR Safety Code and all regulatory requirements (i.e. CASR Part 101 - Unmanned Aircraft and Rockets). We don't just fly HPR either - everything is flown, and we have several members who managed a 'full house' of low and MPR flights last launch - i.e. at least one A, B, C, D, E, F and G impulse!

For 2013, given that we're still refining our processes, procedures and arrangements, we have elected not to charge any launch fees, however from next year, it is likely we'll introduce a small fee, simply to cover the expenses that we incur with WorkCover and the like.

Hope that helps - please consider joining us either in July or in the future - the CRG is a very collegiate group of keen rocketeers, and we really believe in the benefits of sharing knowledge, experience and good times.

Cheers!

Hi Nev. B,

Thank you, a great response and that's a great launch site you have  . Being 500 km from home I think a bit of planning would be in order prior to me committing to attend.

Nic, given the Space Act (1998), you may have to scale back some of your rockets if you wish to attend

So bring me up to speed - What is the Space Act? and as for excluding 'sounding rockets and sub orbital rockets' I can live with, and dream about, but what is the problem with scale models of sounding rockets?

The weather for our HPR weekend at Ardlethan is looking a bit variable. There is a chance of a shower over the weekend but as the weather gurus are predicting that if it does rain it will result in less than 1mm, the weekend is definitely going ahead.

For those travelling out on Friday, the plan is to meet at the London Hotel on Friday evening for a meet and greet over a meal and a few beers.

I look forward to seeing you there.

Hi Craig

The weather held out for an great two days of launching. Two more of our members achieved their level 1 certification.

Hopefully I will get the chance during the week to sort through the hundred of photos and loads of videos and get some uploaded to the forums. Check out our facebook page ( https://www.facebook.com/CanberraRocketryGroup ) for a couple I uploaded over the weekend and last night.

Cheers

Tony

Hi there,

I have a small question to ask.
Just wondering how you certify your members?

Hi Scoop1261

Just had a quick read of the TRA Level 1 certification requirements and processes and the ARA ones we use are pretty much the same. You can check them out on the ARA website if you wish or you can PM me and I can send them to you.

Hope this answers your question, if not, send me a PM and I will fill in any gaps there may be.

Cheers

Tony
