QRS Inc. Calendar for 2012

Postby october sky » Wed Jan 11, 2012 8:05 am

Well, here we are at the start of another year ! Happy new year again to all in this fine forum. :D

To kick of the year I have a booking for the first display and talk : On the 19th of January from 10am on wards I will be at the 54 Carnaby St, Sunnybank/MGregor talking to a group of after school care kids of various ages. We are next to an oval so a launch can take place. 8)

I had one booking in November to do a display in MAY 2012 at Marsden Library...now that's what you call a long notice ! More about this as we get closer to the date

First display of the year is behind me now and it was awesome ! :D

About 40 primary aged kids were present and at least 5 teachers all listening about rockets. It amazes me that there has only been one school I've been to where the students got quite noisy and rowdy. All others have been excellent. You can see it from their faces how keen they are to hear more. It is so cool. Again, I encourage any/all members to try and see one of these displays if any way possible to see the reaction from the kids. It's worth it, trust me. That personally gives me so much energy to talk to them. 8)

We watched the DVD after Q/A time and it was really well received. Then in perfect weather conditions I launched the Code Red and it made a perfect flight, to the ooohhhsss and aahhhssss of the crowd. Even some construction workers at the school came to watch it and thought that it was cool.....naturally flyers were passed on to these.

Another interesting development that took place was that at present was principal of McGregor ( not sure whether primary or high) school. We got to talking and he would like us to put up a display in their MayFest which annually attracts around 10.000 people, it is very popular. Now, that's another opportunity to spread the word about rocketry ! :D

There is going to be a display & talk on rocketry at Woodridge North State School on Monday the 23rd of April starting from 11.15am.

I'll be there from 10.30am setting it up and if any members have a day off and want to come and see what's it all about, you are more than welcome to attend. 8)

What a great day at Woodridge North State School today and I want to thank Bruce who came to give me a hand setting up and taking it all down again. It was a big help as the distance from the ute to the hall was fairly far.

We were inside a brand new hall but there was only one grade 7 that attended but that said, what a great group of students it was. There was around 25 of them with two teachers present.

These kids we so well behaved and took it all in. Proud of them all. 8)

Launch went real well and recovery was within few meters. Weather couldn't have been better for it. :D

I want to thank Petar for attending last week Caloundra State High School to assist them with a rocket building tips. They are planning to attend AYRC and have a group of students doing rocketry.

Would there be any QRS members that would have a spare Estes style launch pad to donate to this cause ? :)

I have had my original from the beginning and it finally has given up, it's so brittle so lost one of the legs. Sure, I could build something but those launch pads are perfect for these demo flights. 8)

Here is a good one boys and girls : On the 12th of May (Saturday) we have been invited to put up a display at McGregor State School's FETE which goes from 11am till 7pm ! 8)

What's so special about this one I hear you ask, well, in average they get 10.000 people there every year and it's been running for ages. This is one of the biggest schools in Brisbane so it sure is worthwhile attending. :D

Plan for us is to be there 11am, set it up and stay as long as we want. I'll bring my gazebo and one table. Please, all who can try and attend as help is needed. Extra table would be handy and bring any rockets you want.

Ps. There will be heaps of great food there....got your attention, did I !

Please let us know in this space who can come and help, thank's !

Thank's Ian ! :D

There was a half page story about this FETE which is actually a "May Fest", on it's tenth year in the local paper just today. In there they do mention also the average number of people attending being 10K. There are over 1200 students in that school and from 30 various nations so there are lot of various foods to choose.

The Marsden Library display/talk turned out to be...well, different. It was my 50th display/talk and when you add Petar's and Blake's display/talks to that number it is well over the 60 mark. 8)

I had a pleasure of having Petar there with me but seriously, how many people can you expect at the library at 1.30pm in the afternoon ? Most are at work and kids are still at school....so, we end up with one retiree and bit later a young father with two kids turn up. Now, they sure got one on one lesson on rocketry !

At the end of that, they were keen as about rocketry.

Please all QRS members, take note of the McGregor "May Fest" on the 12th, well worth attending ! :D

Important note about the May Fest at McGregor : I have to be there by 8.30am to unpack the ute as no vehicles are allowed on the oval after 9.45am !

It would be much appreciated if I could get one or two members there around that time to give me a hand, thank's. :)

I just looked at the plan/set out of the area and I don't think anyone will go hungry there. On offer is following foods from these nations : Malaysia, Indonesia, China, Korea, India, Greek, Sri Lanka,Taiwan,German Sausages & Aussie BBQ with Dagwood Dogs and Chips.

It would be good to get an extra table....anyone ?

Ari,

I'll be there.

I can provide the additional table if you still need it and will bring a small collection of rockets
