QRS Inc. Calendar for 2013

Postby october sky » Thu May 02, 2013 12:22 pm

Better late than never... ...I keep posting displays/talks in last years thread....

On the 18th of May 2013 we have been asked to put up a display of rockets and promote our club at the 40th Anniversary of a kindergarten which is located at 24 Levington st, 8 Mile Plains.

It starts at 9am and goes till app.2pm. I would appreciate if one or two members could attend to help me out on the day. All anyone are naturally welcome and bring your rockets also...

I will have my gazebo and one table...one extra table would be really good.

On the 22nd of May I will attend a Hillsong Child Care Centre/Center in Mt.Gravatt....Montana ( my daughter) attends here 5 days a week and apparently she has told everyone that "my dad does rockets"....so , they have asked me to talk to the kids....this most likely will be the most challenging group ever...2-4 year old...LOL....good news is that they get a flyer each to take home to their parents....

We had a pleasure to spend over 5 hours today at the child care center at 8 mile Plains with Jeff and George showing what rocketry is all about to public attending. :D

It was a pretty good crowd and we can all vouch for the fact the the people we got to talking to were very keen on what we had to say....one particular gent with his son would have spent close to an hour with us and his son made many visits in between the morning ! 8)

And when you get to speak to a gent who says these magic words : " I have always been so interested in space and rockets and wanted to get into this"...well, now there is a potential new member !

Big thank you to Jeff and George for helping on the day....naturally when there was a quiet period...rocketry was the topic !

Jeff, can you please post a photo of the " Three Musketeers"...please....or it really should be the "Three Rocketeers".

Thank you Jeff for posting the photo of the 'The Three Rocketeers"...to those who don't know ( even if you don't care...too bad.. :P )...George our club Treasurer is in front, followed by Jeff, our Presidente and yours truly.

Today I spent an hour or so at the Hillsong Childcare Center located in Mt.Gravatt....I believe one of the largest churches in Brisbane talking about rockets and space to a dozen 3-5 year old one's. This group included my very own daughter Montana. :D

This was going to be a real low key affair BUT during the week the director of the Center asked me if it was ok for me to have a live link to Hillsong C.C.C. in Sydney....naturally I said why not, more the merrier ! 8)

So, there I was talking to Brisbane and Sydney....like I had pointed out earlier, this would be most likely the hardest of all talks that I have done due to such a young age....challenge for sure...but it went well. Kids loved it and I explained it in very simple words with a lot of body/face animation thrown in...

Question came from both groups and as you guys can imagine...they were what you call interesting questions coming from that age group...it was fun !

I'm happy to say that this was my 60th talk/visit and I can say it with a hand on my heart ( not literally... )I enjoy talking to kids as much as I did in the early visits...it is so rewarding just by seeing the kids eyes light up when they see rockets ! :D

Well done, Ari

Your contributions to raising awareness of the hobby to the kids of Australia is fantastic.

I'm sure that it's good start for them in removing the 'mystique' of rockets and space. With any luck, it just may be the spark for them to think about embarking on a career/interest in engineering, aeronautics and science.

As I mentioned in the July Public Launch thread, Jeff and I set up a display at Logan North Library this morning which will be there for the whole month of July.

This photo doesn't show it too well but you get the idea...people walk right towards the display from the front sliding doors...and it says ROCKETS everywhere...

This all helps to bring to attention this fantastic hobby we share to general public...that's what's it all about ! 8)

The month of August is going to be very busy for QRS promo calendar ! 8)

This morning I have just finished working for the 4th time with the crew from Totally Wild. I mean this is fantastic support we have been getting from them as it is not just QRS that will benefit from this publicity but the whole rocket community.

It was such a pleasure to work with Pip Russell. She is one beautiful young lady and total Pro with 5 years of presenting at TW doing daily 2 stories.

I apologize the size of the photos as I was lazy not to resize them...but at least you guys can see them well...

On Thursday the 8th of August I will be heading to Morayfield State Primary to their science day to do a display and talk about rockets.

On the 15th of August CH10's SCOPE program will do a story about rockets. Those who do not know, this show is a science program for the young one's. So rockets are a perfect subject !

On the 22nd of August I will be visiting two schools in one trip. One at Minden and the other at Rosewood. These are around 1.5hr drive from Brisbane so it is fantastic that country schools are getting involved in rocketry. Great opportunity to promote AYRC also !

And to wind up the month, on the 31st of August we will be doing a display and meet people at Logan North Library finale to the Sci Fi and Fantasy month. It goes from 10am till 1pm and I hope to see number of our members come and chat to the public. Yearly average on this finale is 2000 people over that time period. :D

Thank's Fadge and AC. It's really a matter of always asking....all people can say is yes or no....that's how the TW story began. I sent an email to TW in CH10 and said I don't think you guys have ever covered rocketry..it is an awesome hobby combining science, maths and physics etc. etc.

I think it was the next day they got back to me saying this sounds cool....and that was 4 years ago now....this was the 4th segment on rocketry they have done ! :P
