Formula 150 L3 Build

Postby natty » Thu May 17, 2018 4:59 pm

Ok folks!

I've started getting serious on this build a few weeks ago and I've just finished putting together the nose cone shoulder. I'm aiming to certify at the MARS Whytchitella launch next month. I thought it might be good for the AYRC kids to see a big rocket.

Well, the rocket is big! The Formula 150 (designed by Garry Tortora), from Rocketry Warehouse stands almost 2.4m tall and is a 6 inch diameter beast.

Its now OOP, but its parts are pretty standard so if I muck it up, it shouldnt be too much of a stress to replace them

I've put together the thrust plate with the motor retainer and I've drilled some holes in the motor mount rings. I'll post more later

Well the build is progressing, I'm hoping to have it all complete during the week, with ejection charge testing this coming weekend.

Here's the nose cone assembly. As the nose cone is so long, I've made the shoulder detachable

Here's my precision fin jig, everything fits within a millimeter. I was pretty chuffed that it worked so well.

I made some tracks for the router and I bought a nifty circular template generator in from the US

Check out my AV bay lids! I've used the cylinders from a PML kit that never quite worked out

Now time to build the sled - I was planning on using a nice blue sheet of G10, but it looks like its not going to make it to melbourne on time. Anyway, I can use the ply one as a prototype and do a shmicko job on the G10 when it arrives

Hers the AV bay, to give you some idea of its size

Ive used m6 nutserts for it to attach to the airframe

For added strength, I've put down a sheet of fiberglass with west systems epoxy to join the fins

Good lord Nat what are you drinking

Coming along well mate, the blue glass looks awesome, will you leave it unpainted?

Also I've not seen the fins attached to the MMT outside of the airframe before, that looks like a brilliant idea to get strong internal fillets. How do you fill the excess fin slots in the airframe after wards?
