Cluster Duck

A few years ago my Big Daddy was destroyed when the nose cone got jammed. Ever since then I have been on the look out for a replacement stubby rocket.

At the weekend I picked up a Loc Onyx at the NSWRA launch.

Its a great little kit with almost everything you need in the box.

The only extra item I bought was the motor retainer :oops:

My intention was to fly it as designed with the 29mm motor mount. But after running some sims I decided a 3 x 24mm cluster would be more fun. I guess I'll use the motor mount and retainer for another project

So I designed some new centering rings.

And printed them (with 50% infill).

Finished rings which include with fin guides, threaded metal insert for motor retention and a hole in the top for a shock cord mount.

The motor mount tubes are canted at an angle for safety (shown here upside down). OpenRocket suggests it will fly okay even if one motor doesn't light.

The rings and motor mount tubes weigh just 49g.

Test fit.

I think 3 x D12-5 will be the way to go.

I should explain the name.

I thought this rocket was a good size and shape to be a duck themed rocket. Yellow nose cone(beak), white body, orange fins (feet).

Then I thought of the name Cluster Duck and I was very pleased with myself......until I discovered North Coast Rocketry have a rocket called Cluster Duck :oops:

Their rocket looks nothing like a duck, which is a missed opportunity in my opinion.

I may rename it the Angry Duck, as I have just finished my L2 (the Angry Bee). But too late to change the title of this thread
