Vinyl Decals

Back in February 2013 Krustry announced his acquisition of a new Roland GX-24 vinyl cutter, which you can read about on this thread.

Last Thursday afternoon, I placed an ordered with Krustry for some custom vinyl decals. His level of service can only be described as
EXCEPTIONAL. This is my story.

I wanted some decals for a scaled-down MPR version of the LOC/Precision EZI-65. I couldn't find the appropriate font, so I sent my request to Krustry via email with the URL to the LOC/Precision spec's sheet and image for the EZI-65. He replied that evening with a proof of the decals based the font as the original LOC/Precision graphics. We finalised the payment and delivery details in a couple more emails. Krustry cut and packaged the decals later that same night, ready for the following day's mail (Friday).

My decals arrived today (Monday). Woo hoo!

Krustry's high standard of packaging matches Bones from Suburban Rocketry. The exterior was corrugated cardboard (with appropriate, essential instructions to Australia Post) and inside the decals were sealed in a plastic bag.

Krustry also threw in a few extra goodies: three cool fridge magnets and a I Build Rockets sticker (which will go on my range box).

The actual vinyl decals are all neat and accurately cut. I also bought some centre of pressure (C.P.) decals from Krustry, which are one of his stock decal designs.

Krustry, you'll be hearing from me again soon. I'm currently re-painting my PML ¼ scale Patiot and it'll need more vinyl.

I also got some vinyls cut by krusty this week and they turned out great.

The paint job might be average bit the vinyls were just how i wanted them.

According to the specs of my cutter -

Width: 584 mm (22-15/16 in.)
Length: 24998 mm (984-1/8 in.)


But there is an accuracy factor

±1 mm or less for movement distance of 210 mm or less in material-feed direction
and movement distance of 170 mm or less in width direction (Excluding effects of printer and/or material)


That said, I've not had any accuracy issues on the work I've done so far and I've read that you don't start to see it until you're doing stuff 3+ meters long.

So, crazy stupid big! But not everything may be perfectly aligned. I've never attempted anything that big... Nowhere near it!

As for files - I used CorelDRAW. Vector files like SVG and DXF are good - I can convert those. If you have a JPG or similar, I can turn that into a vector. Marty sent me a PDF (for the decals above). I was able to use regular fonts to reproduce everything except for the QED - I just couldn't get the right font?! So I went and vectorised the PDF he sent me.

Why, what have you got in mind?

The altimeter decals are actually quite fine but the cutter did a fantastic job!

I've got to say that Krusty does a magnificent job on the decals and uses good quality vinyl.

He did a great job on my 1/4 scale patriot and I'm sure it was a combination of his decals and the cable cutter that brought it down very close to the launch pad!
