Rocketfest XVI is on Sunday 1st April 2011

High,

The first for the year & April Fools day too, a chance for some humorous rockets.

Scott has a set of transparent rectangular fusalages (blind packaging) for the fliers to try.

I plan to try a new flying fox line and drop off handicap weights so the tag playing rockets can go farther and have two tag events.

Please come at:

12 Noon - If you are a Flier

1 pm If you just want to watch Rockets.

First rocket flies at 1pm sharp!

Where:
If you have not been before & want to come pls send me a "pm" with your email address, or send an email to rockets4u@optusnet.com.au & I will send the location details.
It’s too far ahead to have any idea about the weather, so just in case, please check back here on Sunday am in case of postponement.

You are invited to fly (399.9 feet) or watch, be warned though our 20 acre site is not exactly flat and there are a "few" trees, which one of our number specialises in finding.

Hope to see you there!

It's on my calender.
I have a few projects but I'm not sure if they'll make it.

It went well, nice low wind & good weather. Photos & videos will take me a little while, I tried to upload one here, but could not compress it enough for the 256kB limit, but Brian has some and was very fast last time, watch this space.

Karl launched the fest with his Christmas present kit on an A & lost it! but the one on two Es came back fine, the coffee cup rocket previously flew well on a C and went far on an E this time, but is now up a tree. His foam rocket went well on an E, but the ejaction charge blew the fuselage apart, it sounded like a shotgun. A good show from Karl with a lot going up on Es. He has also proposed a Drag Race for next time and will nominate a particular Aus post tube and probably on a D-12-3 for a simultaneous launch. I don't think we need to get dressed up!

Scott got 4 of his 7cm x9cm x 2.5m transparent rectangular tubes to other fliers and two were ready to fly on the day. Scott did his with a LOT of nose weight on two Ds clustered. I felt the weight & thought it would be lucky to get off the 3m pole. Dunny roll launch lugs were improvised and it flew with great noise, fire & smoke to ~50'.

My transparent version was a ventilated "pushy-Pully" with a single D at the back out on sticks with a transparent boat tail and TAIL CONE. At the front I had D12-0 followed by a D12-3 in the "tractor unit" with a clear 1mx1m square shute in a clear plastic tube. So the first stage power was the same as Scott's, but not a cluster since the motors were ~3m apart, one at back & one at the front of the rocket. It flew well but the 2nd stage & shute ejection motor was not retained, the shute stayed in & crunch - Oh dear a basic mistake that I should have sorted by now. Ah well don't rush the prep & use a checklist?

Brian flew a few water rockets & Scott was interested to see the launch and shute technology with the g-force activated clockwork timer. I did not reailise that he has a two stage shute deployment, reefed at first to act as a streamer, then fully open.

Next time I hope Brian will have the technology to launch my totally transparent rocket made from Scott's rectangular tube and a cluster of four water motors. I also tried out the new line for the tag playing flying fox rockets. It was fine, but I had no rockets ready for it. Next time though...

Cheers,

Nice - thanks for the detailed account of events and the video! Had to settle for my own mini-fest at the local cricket oval on Monday morning instead: impromptu gathering of local kids & some friends to spectate & photograph, all very conventional rockets, but all beautifully successful flights. The Estes Space Shuttle was the pick of my launch morning - absolutely perfect flight, which was great because it's needed a lot of repairs after many years bumping around in moving boxes.

Here's the best photo of the morning.

Looking forward to the next rocketfest - hope I can make it, although those trees look disturbingly hungry!
