Rocketry Victoria October Launch

Based in the greater Melbourne region, MARS is the home of amateur rocketry in Victoria. (Not to be confused with the planet, we are much closer than the planet and operate less rovers)

Rocketry Victoria October Launch

Postby rocket_troy » Thu Oct 03, 2013 12:02 pm

Well, Rocketry Victoria's Captain Francesco Schettino (rocket_troy) is back behind the wheel from sunny Fiji. Apologies for the lack of notices regarding this weekend's scheduled Oct launch here. Once again the weekend's outlook is crap from the Melbourne BOM, but our Bendigo Local Jase is quite optimistic. I plan on issuing a notice this afternoon after the 4:30pm update to announce if we're going ahead with this weekend or postponing till next weekend.

BOM have upgraded their forecasting equipment, here is the proof:

...by the expression of the forecaster in the background, they are clearly delighted.

BTW tax payers, that is what ~$300 million a year looks like (BOM annual budget)...

Stop bagging the BOM. How would you like your pay rises to depend on forecasting Melbourne's weather :D

Well, if it were performance based they'd all be 'singing for their supper'...

I wouldn't mind, at all, if they got it right - at least some of the time :!:

Hey guys, is this a one or two day event. I have noticed that Qantas have jacked the airfares up for the long weekend from $139 to @ $500 each way...

Unfortunately the weather has struck again and we've decided to postpone this weekend's scheduled Rocketry Vic Oct launch to next weekend. It's too risky to proceed due to high winds and the anticipated cloud cover for Sunday. This year's been incredibly testing with dodgy weather for us and I think S.A have experienced similar issues.

The Serpentine Oct (and final for 2013) launch has been rescheduled for this coming weekend Oct 12/13th. It's sounding like it's shaping up to be an impressive one!
We're aiming for a 2 day event (weather permitting of course) so fingers & toes are crossed for some nice conditions. I'll be posting more updates through the week regarding the status.

Any questions, either PM me or Email me GEORDI@c031.aone.net.au

Apparently, when they spin the forecast wheel at the BOM and it comes up Red 7 that means clear skies and light winds for Serpentine

Update (no final call yet) copied from our club launch notification Email:

We've been monitoring the BOM updates with some anxious intensity! This is our final launch for 2013! Unfortunately Sunday is looking too cloudy and windy to lock in a 2 say event - we're not ruling it out just yet, but the chances are we'll be scheduling a single day event on the Saturday. Saturday is forecast to be quite sunny, but there’s a small concern for the expected wind strength. The forecast is for the wind speeds to start light and finish light on Saturday so the chances are it'll be a goer. Final confirmation will be provided tomorrow either in the morning if things pick up or after the 4:30pm update.

We're calling it a *GO* for this Saturday the 12th at Serpentine. Single day launch - visitors welcome. Forecast is for clear sunny weather, but it might be a touch windy. This is our final launch for 2013 and we're hoping to make it an extra special one! Time to cross those twitchy fingers! There is the potential for multiple M launches :)
