Launch of OZ AREA 51

Postby october sky » Thu May 12, 2016 1:55 pm

It's been over a year in making but finally I'm happy to release the video of the actual launch. :D

No, it didn't take a year to make but there were other plans for the video which just weren't viable so now it can be shown to all you good people there. :P

Many of you were there to see it in real and for me this was by far the highlight of my years in rocketry. Mainly because Homer Hickam himself was there in person to press the launch button ! It JUST doesn't get much cooler than that. 8)

Massive thanks goes to specially Shane Miles who always does a fantastic job with the video's and also to George Katz for one part of the video. THANK YOU !All photos are by myself.

Naturally, HUGE thank you to Blake, Director of Australian Rocketry for putting on this amazing event and I have no doubt that the next one in 2018 will be so much bigger and better again. :P

Those who don't know, OZ AREA 51 is 5.050 Meters tall and lift off weight was 67 kg's ( just about 140lb in the old money). Motor that I used was the wonderful GORILLA 2645 BLACK LIGHTENING ( sparky).

It reached 15.198 feet and the landing....that landing... It was like winning a lotto. You launch a rocket half KM away and it lands about the same distance behind you right at camping grounds  ...and not just that but it did not hit anything while the nose cone was around 4 meters from our own camper van..... Now that is just plain freaky. All of you rocketeers would agree with that. :)

I still want to thank all of you whom I met during those days at THUNDA ! All of you are fantastic people and thank you for the friendship over the years.

I hope you enjoy this one, great memories

Scoop/Dave, I never forget when some one asked what's in the igniter and you answered : Satan's Blood...

Thank you SO much Dave for helping me on the day and you have always been there for me right from the start ! I appreciate it immensely. :D

Nic, I also want to thank you for all your help. Never forget the wind storm that came just when we got the motor in the case.....

Great video Ari.

Pleased you made me a co-star! (even if you were just filming top of my hat as I looked to the sky).

That is a serious compliment I don't deserve, Ari. I just try my best.
You and the rest of the QRS gang welcomed us into the "fold" several years ago and I am very thankful for everything I learned from you and the others.
Only a handful of people have done in Australia what you have and I, for one, am proud to have been there to witness much of it, "rakettimies"!

Ari, seriously, it was one of THE most visceral flights I've been privileged to witness.

That sound, simply breathtaking.

Thanks for flying it 8)

Wow guys, honest I'm getting nearly emotional here reading these comments, thank you so much !

What I said about you Nic is 100% true and all who have met you would agree with me on this. You have become the International Star representing Australia so thank you for all that. Ps. Rakettimies is Rocketman in my native tongue.

Thank you Jase and I must admit, it was just a great launch in any way you look at it. :D

Thank you Cam and Matt ! Blake is in there filming it and David Reneke was such a great help tracking the rocket to apogee with his scope. 8)

Absolutely awesome stuff Ari, wish I was there to see it. And to have Homer push the button, what more could a rocketeer ask for!
