What is your project for Thunda Down Under 2015?

Postby vk2icj » Sun Dec 02, 2012 10:27 am

I am already planning for this event. I was thinking it would be good to see what you are all coming up with for projects for this event. Bring out those ideas people,, lets see what you are going to fly. I am thinking of doing a big V2.

Well my plan hasn't gone any further than a few back of an envelope sketches yet... But I am toying with the Idea of staging a K600 Tribrid to a K350 Tribrid. I think I have got the plumbing figured out, so once my L3 project is out the way, I'll start thinking about this some more.

Well I had only a week previous to the anouncement of this event sent Blake a sim file for a quote on for my future L3 project. The time frame to the event nicely fits mine for an "M" flyte :)
Should be able to manage a shakedown flyte on a J760 and/or a K500 befor Thunder Down Under at which I hope to launch on an M1300 or M2020 , The Rocket is based on the Wildman Extreme but with 5 different shaped fins. Its called " ASSASIN EXTREME or ASSASIN X "

I'm planning a full scale (~18") Skylark Raven, which will fly on a selection of 3 x 98mm M, N or O motors, with up to a 6" central motor if its necessary. If I can get my act together, I'll fly some kind of scientific payload which will study the effects of altitude on near-freezing liquids.

I've done a bit of research into the Skylark over the last few years to get the right dimensions, rivets, fittings etc. Through this search I came across the following video courtesy of ESA, which provides a great insight into the early Skylark sounding rocket program and how rockets, their motors, and the payloads were handled.

Planning on flying a full scale (~12") diameter Atlantic Research IRIS using 7 x M6400 98mm CTI motors in the booster giving a combined impulse of around 60,000 N sec, and a yet to be certified 6" O Impulse motor in the sustainer.

Predicted altitude will be somewhere around 30,000 ft

My current master plan is to build a 1/2 Scale Nike-Apache. Scale diameter would be 8.5". Throw it up on an M for my L3.

There are some serious rockets being thought about here. I'd love to see build threads!!

PROJECT??? I dont plan projects :-P This brings a great idea for a new challenge, Kopius' bits'o'rocket field build.

There is going to be some AMAZING rockets at this launch! I can't wait to see what some of the internationals are going to bring too.

Maybe Australian Rocketry could bring along a "bits'o'rocket" bin and basically people can buy parts for $x to whip up a rocket at the launch site...

I am currently building a 2/3 scale Sparrow Arcus to fly on K to K or L to K (obviously the build is suspended until I return from Chile, but I have most of the bits and I have formed the transition cone and tail cone). If this is successful I might build a full scale version to fly on M to L or M to M...or N to M, depending on the sims and my ability to complete my L3 cert in time....

Pete, why not join the many others who'll try certify to Level 3 at Thunda? :D 2 stage L3, N to M, go on, do it!

I want to try to get L3 next year Simon, but Thunda might be the backup option ;-)
