New AMRS I Impulse Single Motor Altitude Record

Postby drew » Fri May 11, 2018 12:50 pm

Hello everyone!

I know the AMRS Records Committee has been a bit quiet as of late but that all changes today! Matthew Niejalke has successfully claimed the AMRS I Impulse Single Motor Altitude Record! The new I impulse single motor altitude record flight of 4,160m / 13,647' AGL was set at Westmar, Qld on the 21st of April 2018.

Matthew's "Purple Parrot" was flown on a CTI I216 from the QRS Westmar launch site and reached speeds exceeding Mach 1.5. A Raven altimeter was utilised for deployment. Tracking was accomplished via a home built GPS system and recovery was approximately 1.5km from the launch site.

A big congratulations goes out to Matthew for putting in all the hard work to successfully claim this record!

Thanks guys. After a year and half delay I finally made it out to Westmar and the prep and flight went down pretty much as planned. Very straight flight, fins stayed on. GPS got a lock right at apogee and gave me an (unofficial) altitude confirmation, last signal must have been a second or less from landing. Really happy with the outcome, will do a full write up on the build thread.

Big thanks to everyone who helped out, especially Blake for accomodating a crazy flight to +13k on a single chute.

I've noted that it is a very good thing.
