New AMRS J Impulse Single Motor Altitude Record

Hi All

Andrew Hamilton has just been awarded the very well deserved Single J impulse record! He is a humble sort of fellow, so wasn't sure whether he wanted to claim it, but we finally convinced him that he very much deserves the credit, even though the flight occurred some time ago! :)

"The Australian Model Rocket Society Records Committee is excited to announce a new J impulse single motor altitude record of 5336m / 17,507' AGL set by Andrew Hamilton at Westmar, Qld on 13th of March 2015.
Andrew did an excellent job with this scratch built custom carbon fiber rocket called "38s", flown on an Aerotech J510 from the launch site at 260m / 853' AMSL and reaching speeds approaching Mach 2. A Raven 3 was utilised for deployment. Tracking, as well as record verification, was by TeleGPS (uBlox Max 7Q chipset), whilst the text-book recovery was approximately 1.8km from launch.

Congratulations Drew, this is a world class effort! We hope to see many more flights like this from WA!"

Yea, those J510s are pretty grunty motors! And no, I will not be attempting this flight again. :( This rocket along with the booster it sat on top of (my SpeedStack staging rocket) are both still down at Williams. I might go for a wander again to see if I can find it when we're down there... Fingers crossed I come back with the rocket and not a tick like last time!

No worries mate. That's why I called it 38s, the s was for sustainer. Originally I hand planned to attempt the staging flight at Thunda but I didn't get the booster done in time... Which, in hindsight, was probably a good decision! ;)

I remember coming out with you and Julian to find that little one in the sorghum field.

GPS tracking was the only way you found that one !

Thanks for the comments gentlemen, they're much appreciated!

And yes Strud, I should thank you for driving me to collect the rocket! The downside of the TeleGPS is the requirement of a laptop to have your TeleDongle connect to as I'm not keen on spending $150 on the TeleBT that would work on Android. So my hands were pretty full with a 5 element YAGI and TeleDongle connected to my X220 laptop. Lucky for me you and Julian were both keen to assist on the recovery!
