CRG's June 2021 HPR Launch at Ardlethan

Postby Voyager » Tue Jun 01, 2021 12:28 pm

Canberra Rocketry Group's 2nd high power launch for 2021 will take place from Monday 14th to Saturday 19th June at our Ardlethan launch site, weather and COVID permitting.

The Ardlethan launch site currently has a ceiling of 15,000 feet and is located in wide open paddocks with few trees. We will also be launching low and mid power rockets.

All rocketeers are welcome to come along and fly to their certification level. Please note that you WILL require a current Tripoli membership to fly with us. Launch fees will apply to non-CRG members. Those wishing to fly HPR should also have a current pyrotechnic licence. If your licence and security clearance have been applied for but not yet received, then you will need to arrange for a sponsored HPR launch in advance.

Flyers wishing to attempt HPR certification with CRG are required to apply at least one week prior to the launch date. Details and application forms are available on our website at https://canberrarocketry.no-ip.org/certification.htm.

Launching will kick off at 8:30 each morning and will wrap up at 5 PM on the Saturday. If you wish to attend please let us know through email to canberrarocketry@ozemail.com.au so we can keep a check on numbers.

CRG has the launch equipment for low and mid power rockets on 3, 4 and 6mm rods, and high power rockets on 1010 rail (up to 3 metres long) and 1515 rail (3.6 meters) on a launch tower. We have hybrid launch capability, but rocketeers are more than welcome to bring along their own hybrid GSE if they need something that we do not have. Contact us via our email address and we can discuss if our kit fits your system.

Ardlethan is about 3½ hours from Canberra, 4½ hours from Sydney and about 5 hours from Melbourne. Head to the CRG website (http://canberrarocketry.no-ip.org/) and go to the High Power page for more details on the site. If you wish to attend and haven't been to the site before, please contact us and we will provide details for getting to the site from Ardlethan.

Accommodation in Ardlethan is at the London Hotel with both motel style and pub rooms available. To book accommodation give Jeff Thomson a call on 02 6978 2300. Accommodation is also available at the Beckom Hotel a few km from Ardlethan. There is also camping available adjacent the Beckom Hotel.

Canberra Rocketry Group COVID-19 Safety Procedures (Rev. 1.1 April 2021)

Visit the NSW Health website http://www.health.nsw.gov.au for further information. However, for our launches we ask that you observe the following:

• Do not attend if you feel unwell or have flu-like symptoms.
• All attendees will be required to fill out the COVID-19 attendance form on arrival.
• Exercise social distancing at all times. Masks are optional but should be available if necessary. We will have a limited stock of these, if necessary.
• Hand sanitiser will be available for all attendees at the LCO bench, but you would be advised to bring your own.
• Remain behind the orange line at all times except for when you are installing rockets on the launch racks and when retrieving your rockets.
• Please complete your launch card details with your own pen to avoid unnecessary physical contacts prior to the RSO check.
• The RSO will perform a limited-contact inspection of all rockets for airworthiness. It might be required for the flyer to disassemble the rocket to confirm or rule out any safety concerns. After the inspection you will be assigned a pad. Please limit the number of people at each pad or launch rack to 2 people.
• Flyers should use hand sanitizer after loading their rocket on the pad and return to their preparation area behind the orange line.
• There may be other requirements on the day depending on circumstances. We will have a safety briefing prior to the first launch.
• If you have any concerns or questions about safety or the range operations, please speak to one of the CRG supervisors or contact us prior to the launch date.

Stay well & safe.
Cheers, John

The weather update for next week's launch is not the best for our first Winter HPR launch for 2021. Monday and Tuesday are cool and clear with light winds. However, from Wednesday onward there is rain forecast through to at least Friday. See the BOM Ardlethan forecast below. The winds will pick up later in the week with the rain periods.

Those of you who are planning to attend should check the weather updates over the next couple of days, particularly if you are planning to camp.

Currently we are still GO for launch!

Anyone planning on attending the launch from tomorrow (Wednesday) should be aware that thunderstorms are forecast for the area with 6 - 10 mm of rain. There is still rain forecast for Thursday and Friday, but they might only be passing showers. Yesterday and today we’re near perfect conditions with light winds.

Today’s launch has been affected by several passing showers and windy conditions making setup, prepping and launching difficult. We are monitoring the conditions through the afternoon, but if you were planning on attending today, then it’s probably not worth it. We have decided to cancel the launch for today.

Today’s launch was unfortunately cancelled after one launch due to periodic drizzle, showers and low cloud base. Unfortunately, the forecast conditions for tomorrow are probably worse. However, Saturdays’ forecast is much better, but won’t be close to the conditions we experienced on Monday and Tuesday. Check the Ardlethan forecast at https://www.weatherzone.com.au/nsw/riverina/ardlethan.

Please note that we will be closing the range from 15:30 on Saturday afternoon so that we can pack up prior to sunset at about 17:00. Flyers should be prepared to complete any launches before this time and to allow enough daylight time for retrieving their rockets, if necessary.

Todays' launch was cancelled due to heavy overnight rain, morning fog, very low cloud, drizzle and showers. It was decided to allow the site to drain and dry out over the afternoon to allow for easier access and site passage for Saturdays' launching. The increased traffic would have caused significant deterioration of the access track and field conditions.
